Eliminating Blinding Trachoma: Karamoja, Uganda

Shedding Light on the Fight Against Trachoma in Uganda

Trachoma, a blinding bacterial infection of the eye caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, haunts humanity as one of the oldest known diseases. It not only robs individuals of their sight but also imposes detrimental socio-economic burdens on affected communities. My journey to the rugged terrain of the Karamoja region in Uganda where I had the honor of documenting a multi-faceted program meticulously designed and tirelessly executed by countless international partners in collaboration with the International Trachoma Initiative.
I was able to witness firsthand the magnitude of the battle against trachoma in a region where its impact has been severe and persistent. I captured the tireless efforts of healthcare workers tirelessly administering antibiotics, and the unwavering commitment of the community members embracing hygiene and sanitation practices.
The collaboration among various international partners and local and health ministries was noteworthy. Their combined expertise, resources, and dedication were the driving force behind this commendable initiative.

Hygiene & Sanitation: Yangon, Myanmar

Project Kalay and its partners, including Unilever Myanmar, provided a vital and impactful initiative to promote handwashing in communities, especially monastic schools where governmental support is minimal to non-existent yet provides essential education for the poorest children in Myanmar. Education about handwashing is a basic skill that is often overlooked yet is crucial for maintaining good health, especially in underprivileged areas.
Simple acts like washing hands can significantly reduce the spread of diseases and infections. However, many individuals, particularly in remote or impoverished regions, lack access to essential knowledge about hygiene practices. Project Kalay and its partners worked to disseminate information to instill a vital link between handwashing and good health. and contributed to the long-term well-being of communities in Myanmar.
